According to Japanese legend, the complex pathways of the human circulatory system that connect the heart to the pinkie finger are akin to a red thread. This thread does not actually stop at one’s fingertip, however, but stretches invisibly into the beyond, intertwining and connecting to the hearts of others.

Two people who are connected in this way are bound together by Fate itself. Sooner or later, they are destined to meet, no matter how far apart they live or how much their life circumstances differ. Kindred spirits. The invisible strings connecting various soul mates may stretch or tangle, but they will never break.

I am lucky enough to have met more than one kindred soul in my lifetime, and this painting is for one such person. The ease and chemistry of our friendship has extended over many years and no matter how long we go without visiting, I know that whenever we do see each other, we will pick up where we left off: endless conversation, hikes at sunset, and French Champagne.
