Finishing Touch
Gouache on Paper
28cm x 77cm, 11” x 30”
It is impossible to discuss the Kimberley region of northwestern Australia without touching on the subject of diamonds. Indeed, one third of the world’s diamonds hail from the area.
Billions of years ago, magma escaped the upper mantle and made its way up to the earth’s crust, creating a ‘volcanic pipe.’ Over time and with great pressure, diamonds were created in the pipe, ready to be mined.
This image is my abstract view of the Argyle diamond pipe. The ancient stones see daylight for the first time and are given the finishing touch by human hands: precise cuts to perfectly refract the light they have hidden from for so long.
